Empowering the Next Generation of Leaders: Agnes Scott College Sophomores at RICE

At the Russell Innovation Center for Entrepreneurs (RICE), we take pride in creating meaningful experiences that empower the next generation of leaders. This year, we had the honor of hosting sophomore students from Agnes Scott College as part of their SCALE externship program—a weeklong immersion designed to provide real-world leadership development and career preparation.

Thanks to the leadership of Jay Bailey, RICE’s President and CEO and an Agnes Scott College Board of Trustees member, along with the dedication of Janazya Thurman, an Agnes Scott alum and member of our Partnership and Development team, this experience was a resounding success. Dr. Quintin Bostic, Director of Partnerships & Development, played a key role in bringing our partners into the fold, further elevating the students’ experience.

A Look Back at SCALE Week at RICE

The Agnes Scott sophomores engaged in a dynamic and immersive experience, gaining firsthand insights into entrepreneurship, leadership, and community-driven impact. Their time at RICE was filled with interactive sessions, engaging conversations, and hands-on learning opportunities. We reflect on the externship experience for these young leaders in the making.

Day 1: Exploring RICE and Its Legacy
The Agnes Scott students also known as “Scotties” kicked off their experience with an engaging tour of RICE’s 54,000 sq. ft. innovation space, where they learned about our mission and impact. They explored the legacy of H.J. Russell and the vision of Jay Bailey, gaining insights into how RICE serves as a foundation for Black entrepreneurs. RICE staff members participated in one-on-one interviews with the students, sharing their professional journeys and perspectives on leadership and innovation. The day concluded with students beginning to develop an action plan for a special project to help improve RICE.

Day 2: Immersive Learning at Amazon
A highlight of the week was the students’ visit to Amazon Headquarters, where they were given an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at one of the world’s most innovative companies. During their time there, students met with Amazon leaders who shared insights on corporate innovation, technology, and diversity in the workplace. They participated in panel discussions with senior executives who discussed career pathways in e-commerce, logistics, and cloud computing. Through hands-on exercises and real-world case studies, the students gained a better understanding of Amazon’s customer-first philosophy and how cutting-edge technology is driving the future of business. This experience not only broadened their perspectives but also inspired them to think about how innovation can be leveraged to create lasting impact in their own communities.

Day 3: Engaging with RICE Partners and Stakeholders
The final day of the externship brought the students back to RICE for an interactive session with our partners and Stakeholders, including leaders from King & Spalding, Fiserv, and other organizations. These engagements allowed the students to network with professionals, gain practical knowledge, and further develop their leadership skills. Through thought-provoking discussions and mentorship opportunities, they walked away with a deeper understanding of the power of community, entrepreneurship, and economic empowerment.

The Impact of SCALE Week at RICE

This externship was more than just a learning experience—it was a transformational journey for these young women. They walked away with practical skills, new professional connections, and an enhanced sense of confidence in their ability to lead. Janazya shares, “As an Agnes Scott alumna, I learned to ‘lead everywhere.’ Here at RICE, I take that same approach by supporting our vision that Black prosperity is multiplied through business ownership and empowering entrepreneurs to lead in their communities and industries. Just like we learned to challenge the status quo on our beautiful campus, we’re doing the same thing here – empowering the entrepreneurial landscape and creating opportunities where they didn’t exist before.

The Agnes Scott College Sophomores were at RICE to observe, learn, and contribute. They found inspiration in every corner of our building. At RICE, we’re not just about business; we’re about building a legacy, creating a community, and driving economic empowerment. Scotties heard from partners and Stakeholders alike to understand RICE’s ecosystem.”

At RICE, we remain committed to fostering these types of high-impact learning experiences. The success of SCALE Week reaffirms our belief in the power of collaboration and mentorship to inspire the next generation of leaders. It was an especially fitting opportunity to provide our RICE partners and team to pour into the young ladies of Agnes Scott during Women’s History Month.

We extend our gratitude to Agnes Scott College, Amazon, King & Spalding, our partners, and everyone at RICE who contributed to making this experience a success. Together, we are shaping the future of leadership and innovation.
